Things you can do to feel some relief from depression symptoms.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to find some relief from feeling down and blue. When you’re in need of an emotional lift, try some of these ideas. Look for humor in daily situations or watch a funny movie or television show. Listen to upbeat music to stir your happiness. Reminisce with greeting cards, stories, and photos which bring you comfort and joy. Turn the lights on during evening and night hours and open your curtains during daylight to soak up the rays.

You can take steps to redirect your thinking from a negative perspective. Set realistic plans and goals to feel some sense of accomplishment each day. Work on puzzles and word games to shift your brain into gear for problem-solving. Choose a hobby to stimulate your interest. Avoid asking “what if” questions about the future; they make problems bigger than they are. Avoid “should-ing” on yourself and others; it fuels discontent.

You can find ways to move and play to shake loose your tension. Go for a walk in your neighborhood or a local mall to lift your energy. Eat healthy foods, including plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and water. Bathe regularly, get dressed, brush your teeth, and fix your hair; looking better can help you feel better. Get adequate rest and sleep; try to go to bed and get up at the same times every day. Avoid alcohol and other non-prescribed drugs which often make depression worse.

Your connection with God can be a source of strength and hope like no other. Make a mental or written gratitude list of all that you have and care about. Meditate on a Bible verse, poem, or prayer which brings you hope. Participate in a local worship service.

Some aspects of depression can be due to loneliness and can be benefit from social involvement. Join a support group at a local church, club or recreation center to share your feelings and encourage others. Volunteer at school, church or other non-profit group of interest to you. Call a friend or neighbor to listen to their stories or to invite them for coffee, a movie, or a walk.
